The End of the Rainbow: What happens when Pride stops trending?

In June 2026, the same companies that just a few years ago were racing to add rainbows to their logos and drive floats through pride parades have gone quiet. No profile picture changes. No statements. No floats. The silence is not neutral.

Corporate Pride

People inside queer communities saw this coming. For years, the criticism of corporate pride sponsorship was consistent: the attraction to queer aesthetics felt transactional, a cash grab by companies that did little to materially support the community. That instinct turned out to be correct.

Corporate sponsorships for pride events and programming like RuPaul's Drag Race have dried up in the years following Trump's 2024 reelection. The most obvious explanation is fear: fear of government pushback, fear of new DEI restrictions, fear of conservative consumer backlash. But the more honest explanation is that most of these companies never had a position to begin with. They moved toward the queer community when it was profitable, and they are moving away for the same reason.

The Bud Light moment crystallized something that was already true. When Bud Light partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in 2023, the backlash was swift and vicious. Mulvaney was flooded with transphobic harassment. Bud Light said nothing in her defense. That decision not to defend the person they had chosen to platform became a case study in what corporate allyship actually costs when the stakes are real. The answer, it turned out, was nothing, because the company was not willing to spend it.

Celebrities

The abandonment is not limited to corporations. A number of celebrities who previously positioned themselves as LGBTQ+ allies have since shifted into openly homophobic and transphobic rhetoric. The pattern tracks the same logic as the corporate pullout: allyship was always conditional on mutual benefit. Once the political winds changed and conservative media consolidated its dominance, the calculation changed too.

The Right-Wing Grift

The same people now performing conservative realignment will eventually come looking for forgiveness when the tide shifts again. Long apologies will appear. Admissions of fear will be offered as explanation. But those explanations will not undo the concrete harm of their complicity during the period when legislation targeting queer people was actively moving through state and federal chambers.

There was never a genuine shift toward conservatism. There was spinelessness and profit motive, which were always the operating principles. The conservatism is just what that looks like right now.

Keep Fighting Anyway

The LGBTQ+ community has never required corporate approval to exist. Every significant moment of progress in queer history happened in spite of hostile political conditions, not because of favorable ones. This is not the first time the community has been abandoned by institutions that claimed to support it. It will not be the last.

The strength of this community has never lived in which brands show up in June. It lives somewhere the corporations cannot reach.
